Welcome!
Hello! My name is Jessica Skocik and I am graduating from Penn State next Spring with a Bachelor of Science degree in Crime, Law, and Justice and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. The Adventure is a look inside my head, if you will, that will not only introduce you to my interests but hopefully provoke some thought about different ways to tackle controversial issues. The majority of my writing at Penn State and has been attempts at understanding difficult topics that have come up both in my course work and personal life. There are pieces about equality, gender, law, and education. Each piece represents an inner dialogue that I have had about two or more sides or opinions about an issue. Within this dialogue I grapple with my position as a student and as an individual trying to comprehend the world around me. Writing about controversy and bringing to bear topics that many people do not want to talk about has been one of my most finely tuned communication skills as a student. Framing issues so that readers can see both sides has become a forte of mine in classroom discussion and discourse.
As I moved through my college career I had the opportunity to study abroad with a program that changed my perspective on a multitude of issues which is where the "Writing at Sea" component of this adventure I am taking is introduced. I called this part "Perspective," because while abroad I encountered issues that I had never thought about. These pieces are about international development, our relationship with our environment, and changing perspectives about family, tradition, and education world wide. I am hoping to take advantage of the opportunities that I have been given as both a communicator and an educated citizen of the world by teaching before I continue with my own education.
I believe that people are a product of their experiences, and mine have created an adventure that it is both my honor and privilege to share with you. I hope you enjoy taking the journey with me.

"If you're brave enough to leave behind everything, and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you.
